My top moments photographing weddings in Tuscany and Italy in 2024
As a wedding photographer based in Tuscany, and having the chance to work throughout Italy, I have the privilege to photograph some of the most touching and memorable moments for couples. Each year brings with it a collection of unique love stories, emotions, and fleeting moments that stay with me long after the last photo is taken.
2024 has been an unforgettable year, with couples from all over the world choosing Italy as the backdrop for their dream wedding. Whether set amidst the rolling hills of Siena, the timeless beauty of Florence, the charming cliffside villages along the coast, or the rugged allure of Northern Tuscany’s mountains, the landscapes and atmosphere here provide an unparalleled setting for a destination wedding. And whether it’s the quiet, intimate moments shared between partners before exchanging vows, or those heartfelt, tear-filled speeches, or even spontaneous dances under the stars, it’s these real, unposed moments of love, joy, and connection that make my work as a photographer so incredibly fulfilling.
In this post, I’m excited to share some of the most memorable moments from my 2024 wedding season; a curated collection of images and stories that remind me why I’m so passionate about what I do. These are the moments that captured the essence of each celebration, and it’s a privilege to have been there to witness and preserve them.
A moment of Connection and calm
The first wedding of the season, it was early April but the air was warm and it it felt like the promise of spring and warmer summer days to come. Katie and Dan held an intimate wedding with close family and friends at Villa Petrea in Tuscany. As the sun was setting, I asked if they wouldn't mind stepping away from dinner for a moment to capture the beautiful light. What happened next was one of the most beautiful moments I have ever seen between a couple.
I asked them to stand close, eyes closed, and simply be in the moment together. So often, a wedding day can feel like it’s passing in a blur, and these quiet pauses, away from the hustle of the celebration, are the moments when you can truly take it all in and feel the weight of what just happened. Katie and Dan embraced that moment fully, sinking into each other with such ease and serenity, as if the world had faded away. They stood like that for what felt like an eternity, lost in each other, and it was a sight so beautiful that it left myself and the groom’s sister in tears.
It was a perfect moment, one of those rare and unforgettable ones, and a beautiful way to start my 2024 wedding season. From that moment forward, I knew it would be a year filled with many more incredible stories to capture.
An EMOTIONAL Wedding CEREMONY in Tuscany
In mid-April, I returned to Villa Petrea, but this time, the weather had shifted. Strong winds forced a last-minute change of plans, relocating the ceremony to the large first-floor porch. The new setting offered stunning, unobstructed views of the Tuscan countryside, while creating an intimate and cozy atmosphere for the occasion.
It was a deeply emotional and touching ceremony as Kevin and Becca declared their love and bond with personal vows and plenty of tears, both there's and those of their guests, who were equally moved by the moment. There’s something incredibly special about capturing such raw, heartfelt emotions. Photographing the genuine reactions of both the couple and their loved ones creates memories that will last a lifetime.
Amalfi elopement and Lemon Sorbet
In May I had the great privilege of heading down to the Amalfi Coast to photograph an intimate elopement. The couple stayed at Hotel Santa Caterina, stylish and chic and defiantly giving La Dolce Vita vibes. They held a symbolic ceremony in the gardens and then after taking some photos there we made our way into Amalfi. My favourite part was when we bought lemon sorbet, served in fresh lemons, and sat on the steps of the duomo of Amalfi. I think it may be my favourite part as they very kindly bought me one too! And so with a delicious taste of Amalfi lemons and sticky fingers I carried on taking relaxed and natural photos of the two of them exploring the beautiful town of Amalfi.
A Wedding in Tuscany filled with Joy
There were so many memorable moments from Sadie and Ben's wedding at The Lazy Olive (one of my favourite places to photograph a wedding in Tuscany). It's hard to pick just one., so I've decided on a feeling instead; Sadie and Ben's wedding was bursting with energy. From start to finish there was never a dull moment and the couple’s infectious energy was mirrored by their guests, whether that be a joyful toast, Sadie and friends singing along with the musician, or the kids all running and jumping in the pool, the party was a whirlwind of laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. It was a wedding that perfectly embodied the spirit of Tuscany — warm, welcoming, and brimming with life. The laughter and the non-stop celebration made it one of the most energetic and fun weddings I’ve had the pleasure of capturing this year.
Stormy Light and DRamatic Views across the mountains in Tuscany
For Abby and Will's wedding at I Cedri, near the charming town of Barga, the stand out moments all happened under a changing dramatic sky of looming clouds and piercing golden light. Set against the backdrop of the Apuan Alps, the venue offers a breathtaking panoramic view that is nothing short of magical. On Abby and Will's wedding day it was made even more magical by the interplay of light and shadow that created a cinematic atmosphere, highlighting the raw beauty of the Tuscan mountains. With grey clouds overhead, as the moment came for the couple to exchange their vows, the sun broke through and lite up the ceremony area. This dramatic changing of light carried on as we took the couple portraits too, with slices of light pushing through the heavy grey overhead, creating some dramatic lighting that perfectly highlighted the timeless beauty of Tuscany and the Apuan Alps, an ever-changing canvas for the unforgettable moments.
An INcredible Wedding Dress for a wedding in italy
From dramatic lighting to one of the most dramatic dresses. This bride's wedding gown was simply stunning and certainly one of the most memorable things about Rachael and Andy's Tuscany destination wedding at I Cedri. Her dress and veil created the most gorgeous shape to photograph. The soft, golden Tuscan light added a magical warmth, making the fabric glow in a way that felt both romantic and timeless. She looked so elegant, and even while walking too! People who know me know I am in no way graceful, but when I see someone else pull it off with such poise and grace, I am always in awe! The photographs became not just about capturing the gown itself, but about showing a feeling for the bride, one of elegance and of romance that can only be found in Italy.
A family wedding in Tuscany
Fiona and Levi held their wedding at the beautiful Villa di Ulignano in Tuscany. Surrounded by so many loved ones, and also a lot of children!, it was a perfect blend of joy and heartfelt family moments. The couple’s deep focus on family made the day feel especially warm and personal, with the children playing a central role in the celebration. As the adults mingled and enjoyed the breathtaking views over the Tuscan hills, the little ones were kept entertained by children’s entertainer Elettra Petronilli. She put on an amazing show for the children including making giant bubbles! The air was full with laughter as children ran through the grounds of the villa, chasing and popping bubbles, their huge smiles adding a sense of lightheartedness to the day. It was a beautiful reminder of what weddings are truly about; love, togetherness, and the joy of sharing special moments with the ones who matter most. Capturing these scenes, from the children’s playful laughter to the tender family interactions, was a true honour, and the serene setting of Villa di Ulignano made every moment feel even more magical.
A touching Walk down the aisle at San Galgano Abbey
As a wedding photographer working in Tuscany, photographing a wedding at San Galgano Abbey has always been a dream of mine. This year, the wish to photograph a wedding there came true as the kindest couple booked me to be part of their incredible ceremony held within it's majestic walls. San Galgano Abbey was a Cistercian Monastery founded in the province of Siena. Today, the roofless structure of the church stands open to the sky making it an incredibly atmospheric place to hold a civil wedding ceremony in Italy. It is a place both immense and yet intimate as you are held within its walls reaching skyward. As Louise walked down the long aisle accompanied by her son, you could feel the emotion. As they got closer her son ran up to Mark, the groom, and gave him big hug. It was the moment that marked the coming together of a family and I'm so pleased to have been able to witness and capture it for them.
I also have to make a quick mention of the food at Agriturismo San Galgano as this was also certainly memorable at Louise and Mark's wedding! So beautifully presented, the team there really made the aperitif and the dessert such special events. And the cake! I've never smelled a cake more delicious. I wish I could have photographed just how beautiful it smelt but you'll just have to trust me on this one or even better get the cake maker, Dolci Passioni, to make one for your wedding in Tuscany! And then invite me to be your wedding photographer please!
Tuscan Sunsets at The Lazy Olive
I had the pleasure of photographing several weddings this year at The Lazy Olive in Tuscany, and I have to say it has be one of the best places to watch the sun set on your wedding day. And Caitlin and Mikey's wedding there had one of the most spectacular sunsets of the year. As the golden hour bathed the landscape in warm, amber light, the bride and groom shared a quiet moment on the terrace, taking in the breathtaking view. The soft Tuscan breeze carried the scent of lavender, while the hills seemed to glow with every passing minute, as the sky transformed into a canvas of pinks, oranges, and purples. Watching the couple embraced against this stunning backdrop was a truly magical experience, a perfect reflection of the love and serenity that filled the day.
And after dinner... the tempo changed a little! Caitlin and Mikey had arranged a ceilidh lead by Ceilitaly. So much fun and laughter was had as twirling and dancing to the high energy music was attempted. This was also certainly a stand out moment from their wedding and I had so much fun photographing everyone enjoying themselves dancing the night away under the Tuscan night sky.
A first look and personal wedding vows in Umbria
Paige and Will are the kind of couple I love to photograph. Kind and caring, they have a warmth that attracts you to them. They wanted a relaxed feel to their wedding day with all their nearest and dearest just having a good time. And it really was just that. But the moment that stood out as most memorable for their wedding day, was their first look followed by them saying their personal vows to each other.
We chose the perfect spot at I Casali di Colle San Paolo, with the Umbrian countryside providing a stunning backdrop for this special moment. It was a deeply intimate moment allowing them to take in the reality of the day and the significance of what was about to unfold. Vows were whispered to each other while myself and their close family and friends stood back and let them have their moment. Their vows were personal, each one heartfelt and deeply moving, with words that reflected their unique journey together. As I photographed the exchange, it was clear that this was a moment they would carry with them forever. Capturing that raw emotion, the vulnerability of the first look and the sincerity of their vows, reminded me why I do what I do, to preserve these precious, once-in-a-lifetime moments.
Bright smiles walking down the aisle at Burlamacchi Villas, tuscany
Tucked away in Bagni di Lucca, Burlamacchi Villas is a hidden gem of a venue, perfect for an intimate wedding in Tuscany. My favourite moment at Amanda and Chris's wedding there was the moment the bridal party walked to the wedding and down the aisle. There was so much joy and such bright smiles, but none more beautiful than the bride Amanda, being walked down the aisle by her father. It was one of those moments that, being a wedding photographer, brings a bit of nerves as you want to get it just right. But as I took the shot I was filled with happiness as I knew I had captured a moment full of anticipation and feeling. A photograph to treasure reflecting the moment before saying "I do".
A wedding with a view over the Apuan Alps
When Cheryl contacted me and told me about her wedding plans, not only was I excited as it was in the region I call home and overlooking my beautiful Apuan mountains, but I loved that she and Marco had decided upon the location on a walk around this tiny village overlooking Barga one day. They had hiked up to the lookout point and Cheryl had decided there and then that this was the place she wanted them to say their vows. I always love these personal connections at weddings, it makes me feel like I'm creating a record of someone's personal history.
Two Days of Wedding Celebrations in Castiglione di Garfagnana, Tuscany
Eleanor and Edward had their civil wedding ceremony with just their immediate family two days before the big celebration at Eleanor's family home in Tuscany. I really loved photographing this part of the celebration for them as it was simple but just so sweet. They held the ceremony on a viewpoint in Castiglione di Garfagnana with the sun shinning down and the mountains hazy in the background. Following the ceremony, we took a stroll around the quaint hilltop village followed by an aperitivo in the square. It just felt like such a lovely uncomplicated day, surrounded by their loved ones, and I think that made it really memorable and special.
But I also loved the bigger wedding party two days later, with the most memorable part of that occurring after the cake cutting. The two of them looked at each other and you could tell they were conspiring... and then they jump int the pool! Followed by rather a few friends making a huge splash. Definitely a fun and memorable moment at their wedding.
A bright Spark
The most memorable moment at Nikolaj and Thea's wedding was during a friend's speech. They held their wedding at Borgo Casabianca in Tuscany and the tables for their main meal were set in the courtyard overshadowed by ancient trees. As the sun was setting and the light glowed orange between the branches, dinner began and speeches were delivered by their loved ones between courses. Later in the evening it was the turn of one of Thea's close friends. She had made lyrics to a song personal to the couple and handed out the lyrics as well as handheld fireworks to all the quests. With everyone signing and then holding the giant sparklers high, it was a beautiful moment to witness. I loved photographing this moment so full of warmth, joy, and friendship at their wedding.
A sweet first look
Kata and Adam had a very strong vision for how they wanted their wedding in Tuscany to look and feel, and also be photographed. I really enjoyed the challenge of trying to capture their wedding at Villa Rinascimento, just outside of Lucca, in a way that reflected the both of them. But the most memorable moment for me for at their wedding was a moment of connection before the wedding began. They had opted to have a first look and as they held hands on either side of the doorway before seeing each other, I could tell this was going to be such a sweet moment. The genuine delight at each seeing the other, the huge smiles impossible to hold back, and the pure joy of the moment made it one of those rare, authentic glimpses of love.
Romance in Florence
Trista and Kimo exchanged vows in an olive grove of a beautiful villa in Florence, Villa Merlo Nero. There was a gentle rain and a diffused light that seemed soft but full of a vibrancy at the same time. Despite the weather, the ceremony was filled with love and warmth and after the heartfelt vows, the couple sealed their commitment with a passionate dip kiss at the end of the aisle. They made it look so graceful but I loved this moment even more knowing that in fact, just moments before the ceremony had started, Trista had told Kimo that she wanted to do a dip kiss at the end. The groom simple said if that was what she wanted then they would do it. They had a clumsy practice before walking to the ceremony in a room of the villa; a sweet moment between them both with smiles and laughter. And then when the actual moment arrived, they nailed it! The kiss perfectly framed by the olive trees, the soft yet dramatic light from a rainy day in Florence, all of it creating an ethereal and cinematic scene that was a beautiful moment to capture.
A wedding where it rained but spirits were never dampened
Chris and Lidsay's wedding was another occasion of an overall feeling being memorable more than just one moment. With rain forecast to come in when they were due to have their ceremony, the team at The Lazy Olive worked hard to bring the ceremony forward by an hour so they could still hold it outside overlooking the rolling hills of Siena. The views at the Lazy Olive truly make this venue one of the most breathtaking places to hold a ceremony. On this day, with the clouds on the horizon and the soft light, the landscape look like a painting, adding to the atmosphere and creating a romantic ambiance.
The rain held off for a little while but as it looked like it was going to come in around dinner time, the team at the Lazy Olive once again pulled together to make it so the couple and their guests would still be able to enjoy alfresco dinning on the terrace. The couple and the guests took it all in their stride; the weather and the change in timetable. They were an amazing bunch and I think between the staff, the couple, and the guests, this is what made the memorable part of this wedding for me. The celebration continued with everyone embracing the unpredictable beauty of the day. The rain only seemed to make the moment more unforgettable, a true testament to the couple's resilience and the joy they shared with their loved ones.
A Joyful moment shared after saying "i Do" in tuscany
Fred and Alice held their Italian destination wedding at Castello di Badia, a historic castle tucked away in the heart of Tuscany. The ceremony was held in ancient courtyard and after the couple sealed their vows, they made their way outside the walls, with huge grins, arm in arm. This was such a cute moment made even cuter still when Fred and Alice turned to their guest, having gather at the entranceway to the courtyard, and the bride couldn’t help but share her joy, raising her hand and showing off her wedding ring to the crowd. The guests erupted in cheers, clapping and celebrating as the newlyweds embraced the excitement of the moment. Surrounded by the ancient stone walls of the castle it was a moment of pure, unbridled happiness; an unforgettable celebration of love, connection, and the beginning of their new life together as husband and wife.
The Making of a Magical Wedding Moment in Tuscany
One of the most memorable moments for Nicola and Jake's wedding, held at Villa Cini, came after the first dance when the bride made a stunning transformation. Changing into a playful yet glamorous short sparkly dress that perfectly matched her energy in this moment, she made a fabulous entrance to where the guests and groom were waiting and ready for the moment of the cake cutting. Surrounded by the soft glow of fairy lights and framed by a beautiful floral arch, the setting felt like something out of a dream. With the warm lights casting a romantic glow, they shared their first slice of cake. And in a moment of spontaneity, and probably because I shouted "dance" at them, they joyfully started to dance under the moonlight. The guests joined in and the air was filled with music, laughter, and the rhythmic joy of the night. The combination of the sparkling dress, the twinkling lights, and the intimate garden setting made this cake cutting and the following dance party the most magical and fun moment at their wedding for me.
Golden Ligth and Pinks Sunsets at a wedding in Tuscany
At Madyson and Kyle's destination wedding at Villa Le Bolli, the most memorable moment took place as the sun began to set. Following the ceremony and the beginning of the aperitif, the couple stole a few minutes away from their guest, strolling down the white dirt road surrounded by olive trees, just as the sky began to glow with warm golden hues. With the strong light of the setting sun casting a romantic, golden glow over the landscape, they stood hand in hand, and we walked back to where the ceremony had been held to take in the breathtaking view of the rolling hills covered with olive trees and vineyards. It was a moment of pure connection, just the two of them, wrapped in each other’s arms, with the blushing colours of the sunset creating a stunning backdrop. The warm light, the tranquility of the moment, and the beauty of the Tuscany landscape made it a perfect pause in their day, allowing them to fully soak in the significance of the moment and the beauty of their new journey together. It’s these quiet, intimate moments that truly capture the essence of a couple’s love, and for me make such a memorial moment.
Wedding Vows at Dawn in Cinque Terre
One of the most intimate and unforgettable moments of Jaclyn and Wayne's elopement in Riomaggiore, Cinque Terre, was when they held their ceremony just after dawn. The couple chose to exchange their vows in the peaceful garden of their apartment in Riomaggiore, with the colorful houses of the village rising on one side and the endless expanse of the Mediterranean ocean stretching out on the other. As the first pale light of day bathed the couple in a soft, pink glow, they stood facing each other as they pledged their love in the quiet stillness of the early morning. The calm of the moment made the ceremony feel like a personal secret between them and the breathtaking landscape. The backdrop of the vibrant village and the serene ocean created an atmosphere of raw beauty and connection, making this heartfelt moment unforgettable.
This year really has been incredible for me. I had so many wonderful couples and so many beautiful experiences that I got to be part of and photograph I am always so grateful to the couple's that trust me to capture their meaningful moments. And I am looking forward to another amazing year now - bring on 2025!
